Tire Inflator Adds to Makita Line of 18V Tools

This review takes a look at Makita’s DMP180ZX Cordless Inflator. This is a very good cordless air compressor and inflator that runs on a Lithium-Ion battery. It’s very similar to the Ryobi P737D tire inflator in features and performance.

Introduction

We’re going to take you through the features you can expect to find with the DMP180ZX air compressor. We’ll go through each feature in depth so you’ll have a clear idea of what kind of value you’re getting for your money. We’ll also give you suggestions as to who would benefit the most from owning this Makita so you can determine if this is the right choice for you.

If you need a powerful air compressor to drive heavy-duty power tools, you could probably already tell by the battery power given that this would not be a good choice.

First, let’s take a look at our rating and then we’ll go in detail as to how we came to this conclusion.

Our Rating: 3.5/5

This is a very good choice if you’re looking for something reliable and simple to use for occasionally inflating tires and pool toys.

Our rating isn’t just determined on this compressor’s merits, but also in comparison to the Ryobi, which we feel is a better choice for a budget cordless tire inflator.

While they’re very similar, the Ryobi listened to feedback from their customers. The P737D has been updated and now includes features not found on the Makita.

Going over many reviews, the general consensus is that while the Makita performs well, many people found flaws found with  this air compressor. We’ll first take a look at the strengths of the DMP180ZX.

Outstanding Features

Lightweight

If weight is a concern for you, the Makita DMP180ZX is worth considering. It’s easy to store and to keep handy around the house for everyday use. It’s perfect for lawn mower and bicycle tires, pool toys and sports balls.

Accurate

The gauges on budget air compressors aren’t always reliable. The readings on the Makita are reported to be very accurate, no matter the task. You should have no problems getting accurate readings.

Easy to Use

You would think that this air compressor is easy to use and you’d be right. If you’ve ever used any air compressor in your life, you’ll be able to use this inflator right out of the box.

To use it, simply set the PSI or bar, use the appropriate attachment to connect the nozzle to the stem and pull the trigger. The Makita will start to inflate the object and automatically stop when it reaches the preset setting.

One thing that was noted is that there’s no trigger lock. That means you can only inflate while holding down the trigger. While one person suggested using a zip tie to hold it in place, another reviewer suggested an easier solution would be to use a quick clamp.

Value

It’s ease of use, accuracy, and affordable price tag make this Makita a popular buy. Owners love the features they get for their money.

Features of the Makita DMP180ZX

Let’s take a closer look at the main features of the DMP180ZX.

  • Max PSI: 120
  • Power Source: 1.5Ah Lithium Ion Battery (Battery and charger Included)
  • Item Dimensions: 4.02 x 10.63 x 7.24 inches
  • Hose Length: 25-½ inches
  • Voltage: 18 Volts
  • Weight: ‎3 pounds
  • Warranty: ‎3-Year Limited warranty on tool, battery and charger
  • Included Accessories:
    • Presta valve adapter
    • Sports ball needle
    • Tapered adapter

Note that the description on Amazon says, “…tops off cars and light trucks….”

We took that to mean, “Don’t try inflating all four tires from zero on one charge.”

The battery is very nice. The LXT batteries usually measure out to a fifty percent longer runtime than other lithium ion batteries and they charge quickly.

It’s a bit of a disappointment that there’s no A/C option for powering the inflator if the battery fails (or you can’t find it).

The noise level is pretty standard for this type of tire inflator. It’s annoying but doubtful that you’d need hearing protection to use it.

makita gauge display

We also like the pressure gauge’s backlit display and the auto-shutoff feature should never be underestimated. Speaking of seeing things, the LED light does effectively light the working space.

Who Should Use This?

We like this for the parent whose kids are just starting to use the car or maybe getting their first car. You can set the tire pressure at home, charge up the battery, put it in their trunk and it’s good to go for the day. If they need to change a tire, the inflator is set and all they need to do is pull the trigger until it automatically shuts off (unless you show them that quick-clamp hack we mentioned earlier).

You can also use it around the house, knowing that Makita is a very reliable brand and it’ll get the light jobs done quickly. They have service centers everywhere in the US. Makita is expanding their 18V LXT System line of tools. If you already own some of these tools, this would fit right into your collection and you can purchase just the tool itself, without the kit, at the link below.

Our Verdict

If the features we’ve outlined cover all of the bases for you, definitely check out the Makita DMP180ZX 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Inflator.

Last Notes

When you read through the reviews at Amazon, first check out the five-star reviews to find out what really stands out to the reviewers. Then, check out the three star and four star reviews. You usually get the most honest reviews at three stars – people who appreciate the product but had some issues where it may not have been the right choice for their needs. One star reviews can be what people really hated or, like many five star reviews, can be negative reviews paid for by competitors.

The warranty is for three years. We don’t see the need to buy an extended warranty after that unless you think you won’t be replacing it any time soon after that. The hose will start to become brittle (as hoses do) and might need replacing by then.
